By choice I carve native British timbers in their natural state.
I firmly believe that choosing to use wood in its natural form frees me from constraints, from being limited not only by square edges but also conventional thinking. Convention prescribes wood should be split free with all blemishes and imperfections discarded. The attributes that make us individuals include blemishes and imperfections. And so the wood.
My work centres on the basic beliefs of the Celtic peoples; the balance between male and female, earth and spirit, life and death, birth and rebirth, the curves and humour of life.
All my work is carved with traditional hand tools; I make a point of not using power-tools; they just don't cut the mustard.
